The conversion of a heritage listed building in Prahran, from an ex Salvation Army hall to a 3 bedroom residence. A sensitive balance was required between the need to retain and remember existing components and implement a bold gesture to make conversion to a residence possible. This resulted in the insertion of two courtyards – one located centrally and another directly behind the existing façade, which combine to allow definition of living spaces within the building, and entry of abundant amounts of natural light. Retention of existing roof ridge and structure over the main living space both retains the character of the original building and contrasts with more intimate spaces though bedrooms and other living areas. |
