A sensitive addition to the rear of a house on a long and narrow site, within a heritage overlay. The living areas of the original section of the house are retained but open up to a new kitchen and dining area at ground floor level. These spaces, along with a new study, enjoy an outlook into the private northern courtyard garden which provides sunlight while maintaining privacy from the adjacent buildings. The children’s bedrooms and play areas are located at the new first floor which gently joins to the existing building. A playful linear window overlooking the courtyard and set back clerestory windows provide further light to the upstairs areas and provide a solution to the many overlooking issues arising from the site. The form and materiality of the first floor element defines the courtyard garden and considered combination of brickwork and zinc cladding in the new section ensures a result which is both contemporary and integrated with the original building. |
