Funkis House
Blairgowrie, Victoria
Capturing the “Swedish Aussie beach club house” vibe.
Our clients Fio and Katarina came to Bower after seeing our beach house projects and loving their relaxed feel and the way they connect the inhabitants with the site and landscape through considered design.
Fio and Katarina were after a welcoming and casual beach house in Blairgowrie designed to be efficient, modest and capture the atmosphere of an ‘Swedish Aussie beach club house’. reflecting their story, history and culture.

Katarina is passionate about the Swedish concept of Funkis, developed early in the 20th Century, where one is living simply in functional design. People inside the house are the most important element of Funkis, and Bower has designed the house to be focused on their relaxation and enjoyment, and the house functioning super easily for all.

The house has been designed to be open to maximum views and links to the surrounding landscape, with a visual connection from the front of the home, through to the tennis court.
Its external timberwork and cladding convey a sense of craft, inspired by Katarina’s Swedish heritage, and will age with time to enable it to fade away into its beach-side surrounds. The large neon Vespa sign in the rumpus room is Fio’s Italian addition!
