South Melbourne Tardis
South Melbourne, Victoria
Our clients Bryan and Mags were in love with their area but not in love with their cramped single story two bedroom cottage. White the early Victorian workers cottage had charm, it needed significant improvement and they desperately needed space for their family, their kids becoming teenagers and the possibility of four adults all living together after that. Bower has helped them by designing a house that keeps them on their site while achieving a Tardis-like abundance of space.

The existing cottage was completely restored while a contemporary extension is added behind to meet the heritage requirements of the site. The addition includes a new generous living, dining and kitchen area with a butlers pantry, a surprising basement with an open wine room and cellar, cinema room, powder and a study with a floor window to above for natural light.
A separate teen zone upstairs includes bedrooms, a bathroom with a very cool bath space, and an acoustic felt lined quiet retreat. The home is a zoned and adaptable for various stages of family life, and is connected to the original home by a light-filled void.

Playful elements reflect Bryan and Mag’s personalities such as deep coloured tiles to the bathrooms, a burnt orange cinema, a bright yellow front door and the blue shag pile and lining of the teen retreat.
